About

The name

General System Dynamics takes its name from system dynamics — the discipline of modeling how complex systems behave over time — and from its founder's lifelong passion for systems theory, the field in which he earned his master's degree. The company's first published research put that training to work: system dynamics simulations modeling media consumption and cost in enterprise backup environments, presented at the Storage Decisions conferences in Chicago, Toronto, New York, and San Francisco. That habit of thinking — model the whole system, not the isolated part — has shaped everything the company has built since.

The history

Founded in Chicago in 2008, General System Dynamics spent its first decade in enterprise data storage: Data Manager™, a platform for executing legal holds against backup data for eDiscovery, and Storage Forecaster, a modeling tool for storage capacity planning. Alongside the products came a body of published work — white papers, CIO guidance on legal holds, and features in Processor Magazine, Dell TechPageOne, and the InfoSec Institute — preserved in the Insights archive.

Today

Today the company is an independent software publisher. Its apps for Apple platforms — iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch — are small, focused, and privacy-respecting: data stays on your device or in your own iCloud, with no analytics and no tracking. Alongside the apps, the company publishes open-source tooling for AI-assisted engineering — including the Apache-2.0 Senior Engineering Partner skill, an engineering-discipline framework for AI coding agents — continuing the research thread that named the company. Leadership

General System Dynamics was founded by Brian Greenberg, a technology executive and engineer whose work spans data storage, security, and IT strategy. His current writing and background live at briangreenberg.net.
